Prof. Dr. Ricardo Ramina is the founder, Chief Executive Officer, and Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Neurological Institute of Curitiba, Brazil. He is a board-certified neurosurgeon, holding specialist certifications from both the German and the Brazilian Societies of Neurosurgery.

Dr. Ramina’s surgical experience includes more than 5,000 surgeries for brain tumors and surgeries for skull base surgery lesions, treatment of cerebral vascular lesions such as intracranial aneurysms and cerebral and spinal arteriovenous malformations, cerebral revascularization procedures for stroke, tumors, and other vascular diseases, as well as spine and spinal cord surgery and peripheral nerve surgery. Dr. Ramina was a pioneer in Latin America in several neurosurgical techniques, including surgery for trigeminal neuralgia, cerebral revascularization, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, high-field intraoperative MRI, and the use of 5-ALA fluorescence-guided surgery for brain tumors.

Dr. Ramina founded and developed a diagnostic imaging center (CEDIP), installed the first Gamma Knife Perfexion radiosurgery system in Brazil at the Instituto de Neurologia de Curitiba, and created the INC-Neurokids Program, which provides free care to underprivileged children with brain tumors.
Dr. Ramina holds Master’s and Doctoral degrees. He served as Deputy Head (Oberarzt) of the Department of Neurosurgery at Nordstadt Krankenhaus in Hannover, Germany. He was an Adjunct Professor (ad hoc) at the University of Washington, USA, and is currently Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Concepción, Chile. He was awarded the title of Honorary Professor (Professor h.c.) by the Academy of Medicine of Prague, Czech Republic. He is a full member of the German Society of Neurosurgery, the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies, the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery, and the Brazilian Academy of Neurosurgery, as well as an honorary member of several neurosurgical societies worldwide.

Since 1993, Dr. Ramina has been responsible for the training of neurosurgeons accredited by the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery and the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC). He has trained 30 board-certified neurosurgeons and supervised numerous fellows and visiting physicians. He has supervised multiple Master’s dissertations and doctoral theses, served on numerous academic examination committees, and has held several positions on the Education Committee of the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery, where he currently serves as Coordinator.

Dr. Ramina has authored more than 250 scientific publications in national and international journals, contributed 35 book chapters, authored and edited 12 neurosurgery textbooks, and delivered over 650 presentations at neurosurgical congresses and symposia worldwide.

Dr. Ramina has received numerous honors and awards, including distinctions from the Government of the State of Paraná (Order of the Pine Tree, rank of Commander; Honorary Citizen of Paraná), the City of Curitiba (Order of the Municipal Light of Curitiba — the city’s highest honor), Outstanding Physician of Paraná (2016) from the Paraná Academy of Medicine, and from the Government of the State of Maranhão (Order of Merit in Public Health, rank of Knight).
